All eyes were on Summerhill Winery at the 2009 International Wine and Sprits Competition in London, England, where it was declared “Canadian Wine Producer of the Year”. Summerhill was awarded a total of five medals, including two best-in-class distinctions for the 2006 Riesling Icewine and the 2006 Peace Chardonnay Icewine. The IWSC panel of judges is comprised of some of the most experienced and well respected tasters and experts in the industry, and the group bestowed high marks across the board on Summerhill’s portfolio of organic wines.
Of the Reisling, the judges noted: “This wine is sheer perfection…marvellous ripe fruitiness…quite magnificent.” Praise for the Peace Chardonnay was no less restrained, with judge’s tasting notes reading: “mature and intense, quite decadent in style and perfectly complemented by the rich old gold colour…perfectly balanced…pure indulgence.”
Overall, these honours reflect the supreme quality of Summerhill’s organic wine, as well as the remarkable consistency of excellence upheld by the celebrated team. Says proprietor Stephen Cipes: “We view these awards as a testament to the strength of our vision and our many hours of hard work, dedication and care in producing organic wine, and letting Mother Nature speak for herself. We hope that this international recognition will help continue to bring the Okanagan wine industry to the forefront as a major player in the world winemaking scene. We are proud to lovingly (and meticulously) produce organic wines in a way that will help conserve the valley’s precious environment for years to come—while creating wines that are equally as good for body and soul.
